[Thoughts] How I would fix Nintendo online's expansion pack

The expansion pack for Nintendo's online subscription is quite lack lustre as it stands

source: www.nintendo.co.uk

Ever since Nintendo has started making people pay for online I have been a member of the subscription. This is because of games such as Splatoon and Smash bros. Over the years Nintendo has added more to the normal subscription with the addition of select NES, SNES and Game boy games being playable on downloadable apps. These were interesting at first but with them releasing games very sparsely I quickly lost interest in that aspect of it. So, again, I just simply stayed subscribed to play my games online.

In 2021 Nintendo decided to introduce a new tier to the online subscription called the "Expansion Pack". This new tier allowed you to gain access to some N64 games and the Animal Crossing DLC. While this is a step up in offerings, this pack costs around double the normal subscription just for a few N64 games and the Animal Crossing DLC. Since 2021 Nintendo has added both game boy advance and Mega Drive games to this expansion pack as well as the Mario Kart 8 DLC and Splatoon 2 octo expansion. Even with these I still don't think it's worth it. By the time they added the Splatoon DLC most people would have already bought it. The Mario Kart DLC is decent but with it covering two years with it's content it means you would need to subscribe for 2 years to play all the content rather than just making a one off payment. The Mega Drive and Game Boy Advance games suffered the same issues as the other game apps, where they have not been getting updated frequently enough with substantial titles.

So, how would I fix it? I can think of three things that would immediately get me more interested in this service. Firstly, I would speed up the rate of which new games are added to the respective apps, at the moment we are lucky to get a few every month or two. Next, I would add all, yes all, DLC to the subscription, or at least all first party DLC to it. On top of this I would add DLC day one to the service, this would build on the unique thing about this service compared to other ones in the industry. Lastly, I would have more game trails. Game trails are something I didn't mention earlier as they are that forgettable, but they give you the full game for a set amount of time. I would increase the frequency of these trails, because at the moment they are very rare. To balance this I would put a limit on how much game time the player gets. This is because on one of the game trails for Mario Tennis I completed the whole story and found no value in then getting the game. It's meant to be a "trail" not the full game.

With these changes I would consider buying the subscription much more than I do currently. The subscriptions by Xbox and PlayStation are so much better than what Nintendo offers and doing these I feel would put it up to the same level. Hopefully, with the next console, Nintendo iterates on this subscription based system as it really needs some adjusting.

That's it for this blog, stay connected!

[News] New "Hype trailer" for Summer Game Fest goes live

Summer Game Fest gets new video source : twitter.com/summergamefest Summer Game Fest hosted by Geoff Keighley will be live this Thursday, June 8th as announced a few days ago. The event will be streamed everywhere @  3pm ET / Noon PT / 9pm CEST.  Currently, other than a showing for the recently revealed Mortal Kombat remake, there are no details as to what to expect from the show. However, in a follow up tweet to the video post, Geoff states we will find out soon. In that same reply he also says what you see in the video is not indicative of what we will or won't see. So it serves as just a little mind refresher for some of the new games this year. Link to the video can be found here  SGF video I will be watching this event, but I will have my expectations set very low. Previous summer game fests have not been that interesting so I expect this one to follow suit. Though, with E3 not being a thing anymore offici...

[News] Another game comes to Nintendo Switch Online!

Another game is now available for Nintendo Switch Online members   source:  twitter.com/NintendoAmerica Over on X (Twitter), Nintendo has announced that  another game is coming to Nintendo Switch Online. This includes 1 GBA game. The GBA game included in this update is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. The GBA app does require the expansion pass tier so if you have it you can enjoy this game. This game will be available from August 9th. For more information on the game click this link: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team I haven't played Red Rescue Team, but I have played Blue Rescue Team and loved it. They are essentially the same game just Blue Rescue Team was on the DS. Both aren't coming together as we sadly don't have a DS app. I hope people who have the expansion take the time to try this, as the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, while a bit repetitive in gameplay, bring a lot more interesting narratives than mainline Pokemon games.   That's it f...

Fully Charged: Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble, Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Mario Kart World

Start of a new series! Fully Charged is a series in which I go over games I have recently played. Each instalment will release when I have played 2-4 games, updates or demos. With less time for this blog now, I won't be doing many, if any, full reviews. This series will instead cover the games I have played critically, in a mini-review format. Mario Kart World https://store.nintendo.co.uk This is the game everyone has been playing recently if they got a Switch 2. I want to start off by saying I quite like this game, it feels quite different from 8 in a good way. One of the biggest things I like about the games feel, is the control. Vehicles in this game do not feel as stiff. How could I not mention the wall driving and rail grinding too, those add a lot more depth to tracks and are very fun to do. The new knockout tour is a great addition to the series, I find myself playing these just as much as grand prix's. Free roam is quite fun, there are some cool challenges to do within ...
