Post game content is something I greatly appreciate in games
~Intro~
Many games over the years have included post game content, it's a way to give more content to players who really enjoyed their time with the main game and were left wanting a little more. Sometimes it is in the form of a few bonus missions, while other times epilogue stories can happen. I will now give some examples of good post game content and discuss what makes them good.
~Dark Chronicle~
The post game for this game is quite big. After the main story you follow the main character on another small adventure to a place called the Zelmite Mine. This mysterious mine is huge, forming the biggest dungeon in the game by quite a bit. This Dungeon even has multiple mini bosses, one of which being fairly important to the narrative. While the dungeon does require a little bit of grinding to be able to get through it, it isn't too bad and I never found myself having to grind for too long. What's cool about this dungeon too is that the ultimate weapons of the game were pretty strong for the main game but here they are more balanced as the enemies are much tougher. This gives a good challenge for even seasoned players. At the end of this dungeon you get to fight the true final boss which is a reference to the final boss of Dark Cloud. This was a great way to send off the game and was a lot of fun to play through.
~Xenoblade Chronicles 3~
Alongside the standard Xenoblade Chronicles post game content such as super bosses, this game gets even more content. The main game has characters called heroes, these aid your main party in combat. The post game gives you two more heroes for you to use. Just like other heroes you can get their class and skills too allowing for even more build potential. To get these you need to finish a questline for both characters. Fans of previous Xenoblade Chronicles games will really enjoy these quests. Upon completing one of the quests, you also get a special cutscene with that hero. A cool thing about these two heroes as well, is that they also change the battle music when they are supporting the main party. So, while other Xenoblade Chronicles games focused on new game plus, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 focuses on having a solid post game instead and I found myself liking it done that way just as much.
~Super Mario 3D World~
This game offers a bunch of content after you beat the game. There was already quite a large amount of levels in this game and the post game adds 3 more worlds to the game. These are world star, world mushroom and world crown. The amount of levels this adds is a total of 33. World crown offers the penultimate level, which is sure to put all your skills to the test. On top of these additional levels, after beating the second level in world star you get access to a new character, this is Princess Rosalina from Mario Galaxy. She even has the double jump move from Mario Galaxy. Using her for these levels is a lot of fun. The great thing about all these levels is that they are just as good as the main story levels and really scratch that itch you may have for more after beating the main game.
~Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia~
Fire emblem normally has no post game as the game usually saves before the final map so you can redo it. However, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is one of the few Fire Emblem game's that features one, of which it is the biggest one. This game was the first Fire Emblem game to allow full 3d control over a character. Dungeons were littered throughout the game allowing for players to solve puzzles and find their way through mazes. The post game adds another dungeon to the game. This dungeon is really big and features very strong enemies. You will need to make sure you are ready to take on this dungeon as it can get pretty hard. As you go through the dungeon you get lore pieces speaking of what lies in this dungeon which provided some good world building. At the end of the dungeon awaits a creature fans of Fire Emblem: Awakening may recognise. I will say, I am still surprised they did this and it was very cool they did. Who knows if Fire Emblem will get a post game like this again.
~Closing thoughts~
Post games are far from required, and other alternatives like a new game plus are just as good but it is nice to see one. There are many more post games that are great from other games, these are just a few of these ones I could think of at this time.
That's it for this blog, stay connected!
